Augusta Vascular Center is a group of board certified interventional radiologists and vascular surgeons. The physicians and staff of AVC are dedicated to providing quality care to the people of the CSRA. The center is conveniently located within the hub of the Augusta medical community and offers modern amenities such as ample parking and easy access to and from the building.

At Augusta Vascular Center we provide a wide spectrum of care from noninvasive and minimally invasive procedures to vascular surgery consultation and diagnostic procedures. Peter Armstrong, M.D.

Peter Armstrong, M.D.

Dr. Peter Armstrong joined AVC after serving his country as an Army physician for the past 18 years. After graduating in the top 5% of his West Point class, Dr. Armstrong continued his education at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery in Fort Lewis, WA, and his fellowship in vascular surgery at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA. He is board certified in both specialties. While in the Army, Dr. Armstrong commanded forward surgical teams through the deserts of Kuwait and Iraq and the jungles of Colombia. Most recently, he served as chief of vascular surgery and as program director of general surgery at Eisenhower Army Medical Center. Married to his high school sweetheart, Peggy, they live in Evans with their four children. As a family, they are involved in many activities, including short-term missionary work, running and skiing at the lake.

John Frederick, M.D.

John Frederick, M.D.

Dr. John Frederick was born in Jamestown, ND, and received his undergraduate degree from Hendrix College in Conway, AR. His general surgery residency and a vascular surgery fellowship were done at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, AR. He is a member of both the American College of Surgeons and the Society for Vascular Surgery. After completing his many years of training, Dr. Frederick looks forward to moving to Augusta and joining the medical community as a member of the AVC team. His interests include mountain biking and spending time outdoors.

Eugene Marnell, M.D.

Dr. Gene Marnell, born in Atlanta, GA, completed his residency at the Medical College of Georgia and interventional fellowship at Wake Forest University. Dr. Marnell also enjoys the variety of cases and interaction with multiple specialties, not just being limited to one organ system or set of diseases. His undergraduate degree in engineering made a career in interventional radiology obvious. "I consider it a privilege to bring the latest medical technology directly to patients to solve problems and answer questions." In his spare time, Dr. Marnell and his wife enjoy playing trumpet and perform frequently with various local groups in Augusta.

Samuel W. Mietling, M.D.

Dr. Samuel Mietling, born in St. Louis, MO, went to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill for his medical education. He was eager to reach the status of interventional radiologist in order to have an opportunity to provide minimally invasive treatments to his patients. When asked whether he was able to reach his student day goals, Dr. Mietling laughs and answers, "Absolutely! My practice now does not allow me the luxury of getting bored. I do appreciate having patient interaction because most of my colleagues in radiology have little, if any." Outside of work, Dr. Mietling enjoys spending time with his children and going on skiing trips.

David Riggans, M.D.

Dr. David Riggans, born in North Kingston, RI, is a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia, and did his residency at the University of Kansas and his fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. While in medical school and in search of a specialty, Dr. Riggans was mesmerized with continuous advancements in the field of interventional radiology. "I could see myself enjoying a fulfilling career in this specialty," shares Dr. Riggans, "considering the variety of procedures and disease processes I deal with on a daily basis." And the reality of his workday now allows for Dr. Riggans to take advantage of not only performing procedures in the high-tech environment, but also to share that knowledge with the aspiring physicians at MCG. Next to a miracle are the weekends when Dr. Riggans gets to spend time with his wife of six years, maintain his saltwater reef tank, snow ski, ride his road and mountain bikes, scuba dive and enjoy his pilot's license.

W. Bruce Tannehill, M.D.

Dr. Bruce Tannehill, born in Ohio, obtained his medical degree from the East Carolina University Medical School. While being a med student posed the usual challenges, Dr. Tannehill thoroughly enjoyed imagery and procedures, thus arriving at the most logical specialty choice: interventional radiology. He is now most excited about being able to help his patients in a timely manner by using some of the newest technological advances. When not at work, Dr. Tannehill cherishes his family time, which he mostly spends outdoors.

Karl Weingarten, M.D.

Dr. Karl Weingarten, born in St. Petersburg, FL, was educated at the University of Florida and did his fellowship at University of California in San Diego. Dr. Weingarten joined the practice two years ago, relocating from San Diego. Dr. Weingarten was the head of interventional radiology at a trauma center in San Diego and worked extensively on aortic aneurysm repairs. Outside of work, Dr. Weingarten and his wife of one year spend time on their 50 acre dairy goat farm in Edgefield, SC.
